Somewhere Else in Maine
This painting, though it looks calm and peaceful, gave me all kinds of grief. I paint two days at the Art Students League and then have a gap of five days before seeing my previously started (but still unfinished) painting. Five days is plenty of time to forget why I did what I did, or even what I did (like which colors went into that misty, cloud reflecting water). So I had to rethink it all over again, then test the colors on a separate sheet of paper. And don't get me started on how hard it is to hide or fix a mistake on raw canvas. I did a quick sketch in my notebook and wrote down two of the colors used, but somehow that wasn't quite enough. Thank goodness I loved the end result.
