Flame of the Forest
DESCRIPTION:
I didn't see a lot of them in Costa Rica, but their bright red flowers made these trees memorable. Costa Ricans call them 'Flame of the Forest' and it's obvious why. I painted this from memory one beautiful summer day at Wave Hill. As it was drying on the rock wall, the wind picked it up and blew it over the wall and down the hill. By the time I had retrieved it, the tree branches had been formed. Nature intervened and made what I thought was a good painting better.
