Some paintings just seem to paint themselves, others are torture. Unlike its title, Afterglow (which sounds calm) was torture. It took about 20 layers, each of which had to dry and be evaluated, before the next layer could be added. I created the reds and darks pretty easily (three maybe four layers), but then adding the grey smoke and pulling it all together... More than once I considered just putting it aside or gessoing over it and starting something different. But the image of the skies after a volcanic eruption prompted by my recent visit to Sicily and Mt. Etna or the California skies during the forest fires just wouldn't go away. Fortunately, I stuck with it.
